Electrical compliance
How to legalise an existing electrical installation in Menorca
Legalising an existing installation means establishing what is actually installed, correcting non-compliance, preparing the correct documents and filing them. In the Balearics the administrative route normally uses UDIT, while the exact file depends on use, age and the extent of alterations.
What to establish before starting
- First establish whether any earlier registration records exist.
- The actual installation determines project versus MTD and whether OCA inspection applies.
- Verification is not paperwork: the board, protection, earthing or circuits may need remedial work.
- The installation company issues the CIE after checking the completed installation.
Survey before documentation
The site visit covers use, design power, loads, distribution, conductor sizes, protection, earthing and test results. Any historic project is compared with the present installation to find unrecorded extensions or alterations.
Compliance does not always mean replacing everything
The aim is to establish applicable safety and compliance, not to replace every old component without reason. A serious defect, missing protection or undersized circuit must nevertheless be corrected before certification.
For the next part of the decision, see the guides to No electrical records and Electrical documents.
What determines the scope and cost of electrical legalisation?
Bringing an existing Spanish electrical installation into compliance depends on both its condition and the records available. A documented installation with a small extension differs from premises with no registration evidence, changed use and modified boards. An initial assessment is therefore more useful than a promise to issue a certificate without inspecting the property.
After the survey, separate physical repairs from documentation. Replacing protection, restoring earthing or upgrading cables is installation work; preparing calculations, drawings and an MTD or project is documentation work. An independent inspection, where required, is another service. The quotation should identify what is included and what depends on defects not yet uncovered.
Menorca follows the Balearic administrative framework and the UDIT guidance for the relevant installation. Electrical registration does not replace planning permission or a business activity approval. Where several procedures apply, coordinate them so each file describes the same use and completed installation.
Example: a trading premises with incomplete electrical records
Imagine a Menorca shop whose consumer unit has been extended several times, but only an old certificate survives. First identify its registered file, declared use and subsequent changes. Then inspect circuits, protection and paperwork to decide whether defects must be remedied, a new design prepared or an alteration registered. Issuing a certificate from a quick look at today's board would not explain how the installation reached its present state.
The quote depends on the true scope. Separate investigation, any project or MTD, contractor work, testing and registration so you know what you are paying for. Tell the engineer at the outset if the aim is a business opening or higher power: the electrical file must match the premises' intended use and demand.
Compliance process in the Balearic Islands
- 01
Search for available registration records.
- 02
Survey and test the current installation.
- 03
Classify the required documents and any OCA inspection.
- 04
Complete remedial work through an authorised installation company.
- 05
Issue the certificates and file the relevant UDIT procedure.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be legalised without the original project?
Often yes, but the current installation must be reconstructed and justified using the required document route. A project category cannot be downgraded to an MTD.
Must the entire old installation be replaced?
Not automatically. Testing determines the scope, but defects that prevent a safe compliance declaration must be corrected.
