EV charging
How is an EV charger legalised in Menorca?
EV charging must be designed under ITC-BT-52, installed by an authorised company, verified, certified and registered through the relevant Balearic process. A project is required above 50 kW, for outdoor installations above 10 kW and for mode 4 charging; general ITC-BT-04 classification also applies.
Project or MTD
The EV-specific thresholds are in ITC-BT-04.3. Below them, documentation is still required: an MTD applies unless another characteristic triggers a project.
ITC-BT-04 provides an exception for charging installed in existing group g) and h) car parks within residential buildings: no project is required for that charging work if the new installation falls outside group z). The garage classification alone does not trigger a new charging project in this case.
Apartment or business
Select an ITC-BT-52 arrangement and assess dynamic load management, common routes, metering and future expansion. A business may also need coordination with its activity file and public access.
For the next part of the decision, see the guides to When a project is required and Electrical documents.
Choosing EV charging power and the supply circuit
Charging power depends on the vehicle, available charging time and supply capacity, rather than the charger’s maximum rating alone. An adjustable unit can operate at a lower power where the design allows. Dynamic load management adapts charging to other loads but does not replace cable sizing or circuit protection.
For a communal garage, establish the supply origin, cable route and energy metering arrangement. ITC-BT-52 provides different schemes; the choice affects metering, protective devices and future extensions. The electrical work and any required communication or authorisation within the owners’ association are separate matters that need coordination.
To register an EV charger in Menorca, the file must match the actual installation and its classification. Residual-current protection and response to DC components depend on the charging system and the functions built into the equipment. Do not assume that every standard domestic RCD is suitable for every charger.
A private parking bay is different from a business car park
Charger rating is only one input. In a shared residential car park, establish the supply point, cable route, energy metering and relationship with communal services. At business premises, consider simultaneous charging, existing demand and whether ITC-BT-04 requires a project. A design suitable for one parking space cannot automatically be repeated for ten charge points.
Before ordering, check arrangements with the owners' association, space for cable routes and the Balearic low-voltage registration process. The electrical contractor must install and test to ITC-BT-52 and issue the relevant certificate. Distinguishing design, construction, registration and network-operator dealings makes competing quotes easier to compare.

Frequently asked questions
Is a project always required?
No. It applies at the stated thresholds or under another ITC-BT-04 category; otherwise an MTD is used.
Do I need the owners' association's permission?
Spanish property rules distinguish notice from approval depending on the work. Common elements must be respected and documented.
