Solar self-consumption
Adding a battery to existing solar panels: paperwork and limits
Adding a fixed battery to an existing PV system requires a review of the electrical design and its documentation. Do not assume the original registration covers the alteration. The procedure depends on how storage is connected, the inverter arrangement and any changes to declared power or the self-consumption category.
Establish what is already installed
Recover the design document, installation certificate, registration record, wiring diagram and inverter specifications. The make and model matter: not every inverter accepts batteries, and a hybrid label does not establish compatibility with every battery.
Storage may be DC-coupled to the solar inverter or use a separate AC-connected battery inverter. These arrangements affect the diagram, protection, energy controls and potentially declared power ratings. Article 5.7 of Royal Decree 244/2019 allows storage subject to the required protection and permitted metering arrangements.
kW and kWh answer different questions
kWh describes stored energy; kW describes the power the system can deliver or absorb. A battery with 10 kWh of usable capacity and a 3 kW output limit cannot automatically supply appliances demanding 5 kW together.
At a constant 1 kW load, dividing 10 kWh by 1 kW gives ten theoretical hours. Actual runtime depends on losses, minimum reserve, temperature, state of charge and changing demand. Use the usable capacity and limits of the complete system, rather than the headline capacity alone.
A battery does not automatically provide outage backup
A grid-connected installation may stop supplying power when the grid fails, even if stored energy remains. Backup operation requires suitable equipment, the correct output or operating arrangement, and separation that prevents accidental energisation of the external network.
Specify which circuits need backup, their simultaneous demand and starting peaks. Keeping a fridge, lights and communications running is a different objective from powering the whole property, electric cooking or a pump. The design and quotation should expressly describe the backup function.
Documentation and registration in the Balearics
The UDIT-034 procedure includes a route for modifying previously registered small generating installations connected to the grid. Check whether the proposal falls within its scope and which alteration documents are required. Off-grid installations use the general low-voltage registration procedure, UDIT-001.
Update the diagram and affected technical details, then establish the necessary certificates, design documents and inspections. If the original records are missing, clarify that first. Our solar registration guide explains the underlying installation file.
When storage may be worthwhile
The financial assessment should compare usable hourly surplus, evening demand, electricity purchase prices, lost export compensation, losses and installed cost. Large summer exports do not guarantee enough battery use throughout the year. For a second home in Menorca, unoccupied months can significantly change the result.
Effika can review an existing installation and assess storage, backup and documentation. For an initial assessment, provide hourly consumption and generation data where available, bills, the inverter model and your main objective: savings, backup for selected circuits or both.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep my existing inverter?
Sometimes, through a compatible battery or a suitable AC-coupled arrangement. The complete configuration must be checked, not just the connectors.
Does a battery increase my contracted grid power?
Not by itself. Contracted grid power, inverter power and stored-energy capacity are different quantities.
Must I add more panels as well?
Not necessarily. Size storage against actual generation and demand; an oversized battery may be underused for much of the year.
