Solar self-consumption

How is a solar installation legalised in Menorca?

The process coordinates electrical design, installation, verification, the CIE, regional registration and the self-consumption arrangement. Planning, sector permits, grid access or production registration may also apply depending on power, location and export.

Technical file

It covers diagrams, calculations, equipment, layout, protection and compatibility with the existing consumer installation. The installation company issues the CIE after verification; project and technical direction are added where mandatory.

Surplus compensation

Simplified compensation credits exported energy on the bill within RD 244/2019 conditions and limits. It is not unlimited energy sale and does not make the energy term negative. The arrangement and contract follow technical registration.

Export and zero-export solar installations in Spain

A zero-export installation uses a system that prevents electricity being fed into the grid; this does not remove electrical documentation or commissioning requirements. With export, unused energy can enter the network, and access, connection and settlement arrangements need checking. Requirements depend on capacity, location and configuration rather than panel count alone.

Simplified surplus compensation is subject to Royal Decree 244/2019, including the 100 kW associated generation capacity limit and its other conditions. The credit is economically capped by reference to electricity purchased from the grid during the billing period. A retailer’s virtual battery is a separate contractual product; its terms should not be confused with the statutory compensation mechanism.

For solar PV registration in Menorca, also check roof condition, structural support, any protected status and the municipal procedure. Records must distinguish module and inverter power correctly and describe the actual arrangement. Keep certificates, registration receipts and confirmation of the supply arrangement: seeing production in the inverter app does not prove completion of those steps.

What to decide before putting solar panels on a roof

First determine whether the system connects to the grid, whether it exports surplus energy and whether it qualifies for simplified compensation. Export and compensation are different concepts; the arrangement and contracts decide what applies. Assess the roof, DC and AC protection, connection point and any planning or heritage constraints too.

In Menorca, electrical registration and self-consumption procedures must be coordinated with the Balearic authority and, where relevant, the distribution network operator and supplier. Keep the final diagram, equipment specifications, CIE, registration evidence and chosen arrangement. One form does not necessarily complete every legalisation step.

The procedure in the right order

  1. 01

Assess roof, structure, shading and consumption.

  2. 02

Set power, diagram and self-consumption arrangement.

  3. 03

Check planning, grid and REBT documentation.

  4. 04

    Install, verify and certify.

  5. 05

Register in the Balearics and complete distributor/supplier activation.

Frequently asked questions

Is planning permission always needed?

Municipal treatment depends on location, protection and scope; check before work.

Does no-export remove all paperwork?

It may simplify grid access in some cases, but not electrical design, CIE and registration.

Regulatory basis and official sources

Always check the current version of the rule and the administrative procedure that applies to the specific case.
